In late June 2016, Harvey and Marco met for the first time in Harvey’s Brooklyn apartment. They both knew and admired each other’s work, but had never played together. It turned out to be a memorable afternoon that resulted in some wonderful improvised electric guitar duo music. It was so much fun that they said they must do it again…
Steve Messina of the band, Blow Up Hollywood saw a YouTube video of their improvisations from that day and thought it would be great to host a concert with them in his place in Forest Hills, Queens. So come join us on September 21, when Harvey and Marco will look to create more wonderful improvised electric guitar duo music together!
Harvey Valdes‘ eclectic musical journey spans the East and the West, the electric and the acoustic, the ensemble and the solo voice. Traversing expansive stylistic ground from jazz, world, to funk, punk, and avant-garde, Harvey plays the six and seven-string guitar, the oud and Turkish cumbus.
Endlessly curious about the guitar’s sonic range, Harvey plays with pushing its potential. Highlighting texture, stretching time, and shaping tone he re-imagines the guitar as a horn, an orchestra, a mechanistic roar. Recently, Harvey was featured for the site, Guitar Moderne. His composition, “Listen,” was chosen as Editor’s Pick by Guitar Player Magazine. And his score for Utopians, which premiered at the 2011 Berlin Film Festival, had “one of the most long lasting guitar improvisations since (Neil Young’s score for) Dead Man.”
Marco Oppedisano is a New York City based guitarist, composer, recording artist, and educator. His compositions primarily focus on the use of guitar in the genre of electroacoustic music. He has also composed various ensemble works with guitar and solo classical and solo electric guitar compositions. He was recently commisioned by the New York City Guitar Orchestra to compose a piece for their Spring 2016 concert. His electroacoustic music has been described as“…mindbending music for guitar and electronics…hear Oppedisano’s intricate roar.” (Time Out New York).
Marco can be heard as a guest performer or featured artist on a variety of record labels such as Tzadik Records, Bridge Records, Mutable Music and Spectropol Records. He was featured in State of The Axe: Guitar Masters in Photographs and Words by Ralph Gibson with guitar lumiaries such as Bill Frisell, Andy Summers,John McLaughlin, Allan Holdsworth, and Nels Cline to name a few. He was also recently featured in the book, Visionary Guitars: Chatting With Guitarists by Andrea Aguzzi and interviewed by Guitar Moderne. His music is all published through his company, Out Your Ear (ASCAP).
