Review of Shapes by Karl Van Deun & Ruben Machtelinckx, El Negocito Records, 2016
Karl Van Deun – classical & acoustic guitar
Ruben Machtelinckx – classical & acoustic guitar, banjo
I do not know why but this record reminds me of another album played in duo: The Three Kingdoms by John Renbourn and Stefan Grossman. Not so much for the strictly formal aspects, I’ m talking about composition and improvisation, as for the mood and atmosphere that this album can inspire. The musics of Shapes are calm, serene,it transpires a relaxed approach that transmits an intimate and warm, almost autumnal sound. It’s a record that moves easily along different genres: folk, jazz, classical, but with a lightness that overshadows the technical and virtuosic aspects of the two performers and improvisers. Karl Van Deun and Ruben Machtelinckx are, in fact, two excellent musicians and we can feel it: they know how to combine their instruments in a single sound, in a unique intense and creative musical moment. Perfect music for winter evenings.
