Covid-19 is dangerously impacting the social-economic category of musicians. No concerts, poor political and social consideration, uncertain earnings. As a consequence, an ever-growing number of musicians, especially those from the experimental area, are trying to promote their music on BandCamp in digital format only. It is increasingly difficult for me to follow and review this incredible flow of music. I therefore decided to open this section on my blog Neuguitars where I propose music in digital format that I consider particularly interesting and worthy of attention. I hope you like it. Let’s support musicians. They need it.
Long Distance Information by Mike Cooper and Elliott Sharp, BandCamp, 2020 on #neuguitars #blog
These improvisations were all recorded in our individual Covid lockdown studios swapping sound files between New York and Valencia in Spain.
Mike’s tracks were all one take live recordings, recorded outdoors at the Flamingo Lounge and Rooftop Bar using a Zoom H2 with his Brazilian 10 string Viola Caipira.
E# performed on the Wishnevsky double neck guitar and mandocello recorded at Studio zOaR – NYC into ProTools using a Neumann TLM170 microphone into a Sytek MPA-4A preamp and a Royer R121 ribbon microphone into a Focusrite ISA220 preamp.
Elliott Wrote – “I tried to match the lyricism and excitement of MIke’s parts and limited myself to one take for each piece to preserve the improvisatory feel.”
Mike wrote – “I met and played live with Elliott only twice before – the first time in the early 90s in Rome at a Controindicazione Festival and then again in New York in 2000, where we played as a trio together with Lukas Ligeti playing drums, at the Bowery Poetry Club. It was a great pleasure to meet him again, if only virtually, here.
