Azzara Blues is a modest tribute to Pat Martino recorded on hearing the devastating news of his passing. Pat Martino’s incredible drive and virtuosity were an important influence for me between 1970-75 when I was simultaneously building my own set of strategies for guitar, improvisation, and composition and also drawing upon the huge store of knowledge and guitar-craft generated by such jazz masters as Charlie Christian, Wes Montgomery, Django Reinhardt, Jim Hall, John McLaughlin, and, of course, Pat. An homage to Martino’s landmark album Desperado, this guitar part was improvised on a Hagstrom hollowbody 12-string over an older rhythm track from my Haptikon album. While I will never have the relentless swing of Pat’s playing, I did attempt to incorporate some of his concepts of intervallic displacement and symmetrical movement.

The image is taken from Martino’s book The Nature of the Guitar.
